Republicans have so gerrymandered voting districts in Michigan that even though there are more votes statewide for Democratic candidates, we have a Republican-majority Michigan legislature. They employ tactics such as closing polling places, imposing ID laws, closing Secretary of State offices, and purging voter rolls to disadvantage their opponents. The three willingly accept authoritarianism and the establishment of policies that make it difficult for opponents to vote. They oppose the American Declaration of Independence’s ideal “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights.” And, being in the minority nationwide, they do not trust democracy to achieve their goals. Traditionally, Republicans used “dog whistles” to win their vote. Racists left the Democratic Party for the GOP in the 1960s after Democrats supported equal civil and voting rights. Theocrats are willing to accept income inequality and tolerate social injustices as long as Trump makes abortion illegal, supports religious schools and defends their “religious freedom” to discriminate against members of the LGBTQ community. Promoting fear of socialism, they oppose policies for the common good such as healthcare for all. Plutocrats support low wages, reduced regulations, trade agreements that favor them, unlimited campaign spending, anti-unions, non-enforcement of environmental laws, privatizing government services, and increasing the national debt only when it enriches them - for example, Trump’s tax cut and the corporation bail-outs of 20. The wealthy support plutocracy, rule by the wealthy, such as we have with Trump’s cabinet, enriching themselves as they rule. Each is willing to sacrifice traditional American values to achieve its goals.
